Questions About Our Privacy Practices
What Information Do We Collect?
Our Sites interact with our mobile applications and devices. For example, when you mark a recipe as a favorite in our mobile application, that recipe will appear in your favorites on our Sites. Likewise, cookbooks you create on our Sites will be readable on our mobile applications. There are several ways we collect information through our Sites and through our mobile applications or devices:
Information You Provide. We collect the Personal Information you manually, knowingly, and voluntarily provide (about yourself and others) when you use our Sites or the mobile applications or devices that interact with our Sites. For example, we collect the information you provide when you sign up to become a Member of Key Ingredient or for a Prime Membership, when you create or update your Member or Prime Membership profile on Key Ingredient, and when you make a purchase on one of our Sites.
During the order process, you will have to provide financial information such as your credit card number, expiration date, money order, wire transfer or check information. This information is used for billing purposes and to fulfill your order. If we have trouble processing an order, we will use this contact information to get in touch with you. To properly process your credit card information, we must share your personal and financial information with the merchant bank for authorization and approval. This process is protected by an enhanced security system.
We may employ third party companies to perform functions on our behalf. These functions may include order fulfillment, package delivery, marketing assistance, postal and e-mail delivery, customer service, data analysis, and credit processing. The third parties we contract for these purposes have limited access to your personal information and may not use it for other purposes.
Information Sent to Us by Third-Party Social Media Platforms. You may be able to choose to register, log-on, or enhance your profile on our Sites through a third-party social media platform, such as Facebook or Twitter. By doing this, you are asking the third-party social media platform to send us registration information from your profile on that platform. We treat that information as we do any other information you give to us when you register, log-on, or enhance your profile. After you have connected, the third party may also send us additional information from your profile that allows us to offer certain functionalities on the pages you view.
Information Sent to Us by Your Web or Mobile Browser. We collect information that is sent to us automatically by your web or mobile browser. This information typically includes your IP address or unique device ID, the name and version of your operating system, the name and version of your browser, the date and time of your visit, the address of the Web page you were visiting when you accessed our Site, and the pages you visit. Please check your browser if you want to learn what information your browser sends or how to change your settings.
This type of information does not identify you personally. However, we may review our server logs for security purposes, such as detecting intrusions into our network. If we suspect inappropriate or criminal activity or a threat to our Sites or their users, we may share our server logs—which contain visitors’ IP addresses—with the appropriate investigative authorities who could use that information to trace and identify individuals. In addition, if you have created a “user identity” during one of your visits—for example, by creating a Member profile—we may link the information provided by your browser to information in our database that identifies you personally. We may also use IP addresses in connection with other information gathered elsewhere in an attempt learn the identities of people who visit our Sites.
Information Collected Using “Cookies” and Other Web Technologies. We use “cookies,” and similar technologies to collect information and manage and support our Services. A cookie is a small text file that is placed on your hard disk by a Web server. Cookies cannot be used to install computer programs or deliver viruses to your computer. We may use two types of cookies —“session cookies” and “persistent cookies.”
A session cookie assigns a randomly generated, unique identification number to your computer when you access one of our Sites. A session cookie expires after you close your browser. Generally, we use session cookies to collect information about the ways visitors use our Sites—which pages they visit, which links they use, and how long they stay on each page. This information is known as “click-stream information.” Session cookies may also be used to facilitate your interactions with our Sites.
We may also use persistent cookies. These cookies do not expire when you close your browser, but stay on your computer until they expire or you delete them. Each time you visit one of our Sites, our Web server will recognize you by searching the information contained in these cookies. By assigning your computer a persistent, unique identifier, we are able to create a database of your previous choices and preferences. This permits us to offer you a personalized experience when you use our Sites. Assigning your computer a persistent, unique identifier also helps us keep a more accurate account of how many people visit our Sites, how often they return, how their use of our Sites may vary over time, and the effectiveness of our promotional efforts.
Neither session cookies nor persistent cookies identify you personally. If, however, you have created a user identity on one of your visits to our Sites, we may link the information collected by our cookies to information that identifies you personally.
If you do not wish to receive cookies, you may set your browser to reject cookies or to alert you when a cookie is placed on your computer. You may also delete our cookies as soon as you leave our Sites. Although you are not required to accept our cookies when you visit our Sites, if you set your browser to reject cookies, you will not be able to use all of the features and functionality of our Sites.
In addition to cookies, we may also use “web beacons” and other web technologies to manage our Sites and email. A web beacon is a small bit of computer code. Web beacons may be used to count how many people visit a web page or tell us whether an email has been opened. We may link the information we collect using web beacons and other web technologies to information that identifies you personally.
In addition to the cookies Key Ingredient delivers to your computer through our Sites, certain third parties may deliver cookies to you for a variety of reasons. For example, we use Google Analytics, a web analytics tool that helps us understand how visitors engage with our Sites. To learn more about Google Analytics, click here.
Other third parties may deliver cookies to your computer for the purpose of identifying you by your IP address or for the purpose of tracking your online behaviors across non-affiliated websites and delivering targeted advertisements either on this Site or on other websites.
You have choices about the collection of information by third parties on this Site. For example, if you don’t want information about your visit to this Site sent to Google Analytics, you may download an Opt-out Browser Add-on by clicking here. Please note that the Add-on does not prevent information from being sent to Key Ingredient.
In addition, if you would like to opt-out of having interest-based information collected by certain entities during your visits to this Site or other websites, please click here. You will be directed to an industry-developed website that contains mechanisms for choosing whether each listed entity may collect and use data for online behavioral advertising purposes. It may be that some of the third parties that collect interest-based information on this Site do not participate in the industry-developed opt-out website, in which case the best way to avoid third-party tracking of your online behaviors may be through your browser settings and deletion of cookies.
How Do We Use Your Personal Information?
We may use the Personal Information we collect through our Sites
Email a Friend. Want to build up your community on Key Ingredient or My Family Vault? Invite your friends to join by going to your Profile, click on the “Edit Profile” button, select the “Invite” tab, enter your friends’ and family members’ email addresses on the Invite Form and press the “Send Invite!” button. We do not use this information to add your friend's name or email address to our mailing lists.
If you are a Member of Key Ingredient, Qué Gourmet, Kitchen Snap or My Family Vault you may be able to post, upload, transmit through or otherwise make available (“post”) Your Content, a term defined above, on or through the Services. To fully understand how we use Your Content, please review our Terms of Service carefully. In particular, we would like to call your attention to the following provisions in our Terms of Service:
Without limiting the generality of the foregoing grant of license, you agree that by posting Your Content on or through the Services and setting it to Public, you are granting Key Ingredient a license (a) to display advertisements in connection with Your Content and to use Your Content for advertising and promotional purposes without compensating you in anyway; (b) to make the recipes that you post on or through the Services (“Your Recipes”) available to the general public not only through our Sites but also through the websites and advertising networks of distribution partners and third-party service providers (including their downstream users) of Key Ingredient and its assigns; and (c) to make Your Recipes available to the general public through other media, including print and broadcast media, now known or hereafter developed. This means, for example, that one of Your Recipes (including any Personal Information it contains) may appear on another Web site surrounded by advertisements, together with a link to Key Ingredient, or as part of an advertisement in a magazine. Further, you agree that by posting Your Content on or through our Services, you are granting Key Ingredient the right, with no obligation, to use your name, photograph, and geographical location (e.g. city and state) in connection with Your Recipes when Your Recipes appear or are broadcast on Key Ingredient, on other Web sites or in other media as described above. If you do not want Your Recipes to be made available to the general public in any of these ways, you should select the appropriate recipe privacy setting for an individual recipe or on your profile page on Key Ingredient. Please note that even if you maintain Your Recipes as “private,” your first name (or your first name and first initial of your last name) will be searchable on Key Ingredient, and any photograph you upload to your profile page will be visible to individuals who search for your name and/or visit your profile page. If you do not want to be identified by your name to the general public, then edit your profile page to use a username, rather than your actual name. If you do not want your photograph to be made available to the general public, DO NOT UPLOAD A PHOTOGRAPH to your profile page on Key Ingredient. Instead, select an icon to represent you. My Family Vault’s services are private by default. You, not Key Ingredient, have the sole authority and decision making on how it is shared. In order to make any content public on My Family Vault, including your name and/or location, you will need to set your privacy settings to public and any content you wish to be made public must be set specifically to public.
You may choose to submit a product review. If you post a review, we may ask for your email address and/or geographic location. If you submit a review, your geographic location will be visible to other users (your email address will be kept private). Also, any personally identifiable information that you submit as part of the review can be read or used by other visitors to the Site. We are not responsible for any personally identifiable information that you choose to submit as part of your review. We believe you can post a helpful review without disclosing any personal information.
